Apple Valley: home base and its quirks

Apple Valley was incorporated in 1988 and had a 2020 census population of 75,791. It sits at roughly 2,900 to 3,000 feet in the Mojave Desert, with the Mojave River on its west side and Highway 18 and Bear Valley Road running through it. St. Mary Regional Medical Center and the Apple Valley Airport are two landmarks on the local map.

Water comes from several purveyors. The Town lists 11 of them, and Liberty Utilities serves about 81 percent. Sewer and septic split about 30 to 70 according to Town planning documents, and cesspools are prohibited. Permit rules for specific jobs vary, so ask the Town of Apple Valley Building and Safety Division when a job may need one.

What the water reports say across our towns

Water hardness differs between the three towns, and we use each utility's own published report rather than guess. In Apple Valley, Liberty Utilities reported a 2022 range of 57 to 130 ppm, with an average near 80 ppm. In Hesperia, the water district's 2022 report lists an average near 75 ppm, from 27 to 130 ppm. In Victorville, the city water district's 2025 report lists an average near 36 ppm, from 0 to 130 ppm.

On the common USGS scale, 61 to 120 ppm is moderately hard. What reaches your tap can differ from a utility average, so test your tap before you buy a softener. Our water softener and filtration page explains how.

Sewer, septic and who to call

Many homes in this area are on septic, not sewer, and a septic backup is not the same as a sewer backup. If a toilet and a tub both back up, the cause could be the main sewer lateral, the septic tank or the drain field. We clear and inspect lines, and tank pumping and drain field work belong to a septic professional.

When you call, tell us whether you have a cleanout, whether the home is on septic and which fixtures are affected. That helps us decide between sewer line cleaning, a camera inspection and drain cleaning.

Nearby places we can usually reach

Oak Hills and Phelan sit near Hesperia, and Helendale lies north of Victorville. They do not have pages of their own, and coverage depends on the day and the schedule. Call with your address and we will say whether we can come the same day.

Before you dig anywhere in California, call 811 at least two working days ahead so buried utilities are marked. That protects water, gas and electric lines, and it applies to a fence post as much as a trench.
